Jamie Carragher speaks out after Aston Villa announces legal steps over ‘unacceptable insults.’

Jamie Carragher has finally spoken out after Aston Villa’s chairman said the club would take legal action against him for “unacceptable insults” he made on the Stick to Football podcast.

The former Liverpool captain and now football expert upset Aston Villa fans earlier this week when he suggested Unai Emery should replace Michael Carrick as Manchester United’s head coach. He also said, “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”

On Thursday’s Stick to Football episode, Carragher said, “Surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again. There’s a chain in football, whether you like it or not. Real Madrid takes Manchester United’s best players — they did that with Ronaldo. There will be teams below Aston Villa taking their players or managers, so stop complaining, Aston Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”

Villa supporters quickly defended their club on social media, leading Carragher to respond on X. He explained, “It was a joke after all the stick Villa fans have given me about Emery possibly joining Man Utd. I hope these clips show me praising Emery and Villa, like I have for years, and how happy I was when you won the 2026 Europa League in Istanbul.”

On Friday’s The Overlap Daily podcast, Carragher talked about the situation again with Mark Goldbridge and Becky Ives. He said, “I think Unai Emery is the best manager in the league. If I were Man Utd, I’d ask what’s the best option. I’m not saying Emery will go, just that I’d ask. Some managers are made for certain clubs, and Emery is one of those. He reminds me of Rafa Benitez. If someone said, ‘That’s your level,’ you’d probably say, ‘No, I’m better.’ That was my point.”

He admitted the situation got out of hand and said he told fans to “shut up,” which maybe wasn’t the best choice of words. “It was all a joke because my timeline was full of Villa fans. I was basically saying ‘leave my socials alone.’”

Despite this, Aston Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris decided to take legal action over Carragher’s comments, calling them “unacceptable insults” in a statement on Friday evening. He said, “Aston Villa will not let anyone stop our rise in English and European football.”

After staying silent for a while, Carragher finally apologized on Saturday, October 31. He said, “I’d like to apologize to Aston Villa, the owners, and the fans. My words this week were clumsy and wrong. I meant it as a joke, but I understand it didn’t sound that way, so sorry. Good luck today, UTV!”

Villa are playing at home against Fulham later today (October 31) and will then travel to Camp Nou to face Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday, November 3.
