Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel sadly passed away at just 30 years old after a collision on the field with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono.
Near the end of Monday’s match at Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez, Owono rushed out to clear a long ball and accidentally hit De Miguel in the chest.
De Miguel fell motionless in the center circle, and medical staff quickly rushed to help him. Many players were deeply upset, with some crying as he was treated on the pitch.
The referee gave Owono a red card and then stopped the game.
De Miguel was taken to a nearby hospital, but his condition worsened when he had a cardiac arrest in the ambulance. Thankfully, paramedics managed to revive him on the way.
On Monday afternoon, Tenerife said De Miguel was stable but in serious condition at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. Sadly, hours later they shared that his neurological condition had gotten worse, asking for patience and understanding.
On Tuesday morning, Tenerife and the Spanish football players’ association (AFE) announced the heartbreaking news of De Miguel’s death.
Tenerife’s statement said: “Our hearts are broken, and it’s hard to believe this is real. We share our deepest sadness with Jesús de Miguel’s family, friends, and all of Tenerife who mourn this awful loss. We thank everyone for their support and kindly ask for respect for the family’s privacy during this painful time.”
Several Spanish clubs also shared their condolences, including Andorra, who played against Tenerife that day. They wrote, “With broken hearts, we send our deepest sympathies to Jesús de Miguel’s family, teammates, friends, and CD Tenerife. Rest in peace.”
Barcelona said, “We are very sorry to hear about Jesús de Miguel’s passing. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Espanyol added, “We are heartbroken and deeply saddened by the loss of Jesús de Miguel. We stand with his family, friends, and CD Tenerife in this tough moment. Sending love and strength. Rest in peace.”
