Carlos Alcaraz’s comeback win against Taylor Fritz ended up costing the American a huge amount of money.
After an incredible comeback win over Taylor Fritz at the Paris Masters, Carlos Alcaraz’s victory has had a big impact on Fritz’s earnings.
Unfortunately for the American, he didn’t qualify for the ATP Finals this year because he needed to reach at least the semi-finals in Paris to make the top eight players in Turin.
By missing out, Fritz lost a guaranteed prize of $338,000 just for making it to the Finals. If he had played, he could have earned over $5 million by winning matches, including a potential $1.2 million for a semi-final win and $5.17 million if he had won the whole tournament.
While it’s unlikely he would have won the Finals, missing the $338,000 payout is a real loss. This year, the total prize pool in Turin is $15.75 million, up slightly from last year when Jannik Sinner became the richest champion in the event’s history.
Fritz was really close to winning against Alcaraz, even holding match points early on. But the Spaniard fought back to win in three sets. Because Fritz didn’t reach the semi-finals, he won’t be at the ATP Finals this season. Instead, Rafael Jodar became the first man ever to qualify for the Finals in his debut year.
After the match, Fritz shared on Instagram how much the loss hurt. He said, “There was so much at stake and I came so close. I gave everything on court and I wanted this win more than anything. I still have a lot of work to do now that I’m healthy again. Thanks to everyone who supported me.”
Alcaraz repeatedly apologized to Fritz at the net, but Fritz responded kindly, saying, “Nah, you were too good. Good luck. It was a good match.” Alcaraz thanked him and now aims to win the Paris title before heading to Turin for the Finals.
