“Not even a real football club” – Man Utd fans are angry as Avram Glazer plays down how important winning is to the team.
Avram Glazer recently made some pretty worrying comments about Manchester United, and fans aren’t feeling hopeful about the future.
Despite a thrilling 3-2 comeback win against Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, the mood among Manchester United supporters remains pretty low after what’s been a tough season. Right now, United sits 17th in both the Premier League and Champions League standings, but Glazer doesn’t seem too concerned based on what he said recently.
At Deutsche Bank’s first Sports Investment Conference in London, Glazer explained—according to The Athletic—that the club’s commercial value depends more on factors like ticket and merchandise sales, similar to big teams like the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys. Basically, he seems to be saying that as long as the club is making money from fans buying stuff, they’re doing well commercially, no matter how the team performs on the field.
Interestingly, his comparison to the Yankees and Cowboys might actually show more than he intended, since both those teams have struggled to win recently, despite their huge reputations. The Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1995, and the Yankees last won the World Series in 2009, yet their merchandise is still very popular—even with people who might never watch a game.
It’s worth remembering that when Glazer made these comments back in September, United’s form was poor but not as bad as it is now. Lately, head coach Michael Carrick has gone from being well-liked to facing calls for dismissal, while fans keep chanting against the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe at home games.
Financially, things don’t look great either. The club’s debt rose to £689 million in June 2026, which is £52 million higher than in 2025.
No surprise, many fans online are unhappy with Glazer’s comments and his apparent lack of concern. Popular fan Mark Goldbridge criticized supporters for letting this happen by continuing to buy tickets and merch. He tweeted, “Keep buying tickets, shirts and supporting sponsors and this is what happens. They’re making record profits while we’re struggling. Not even a football club anymore.”
Another fan called Glazer “deluded,” saying, “He’s basically saying the club can fall apart as much as they want, but it won’t hurt their value. That’s why I hope we get relegated—that might be the only way to shake things up.”
Fans definitely have strong feelings about the club’s current situation, and it looks like the debate isn’t going to die down anytime soon.
