Tragic Loss of Hockey Brothers Sparks Community Support and Mourning

The recent tragedy of the Gaudreau brothers, John and Matthew, has left the hockey community reeling. The funeral for the brothers has been scheduled at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Media, Pennsylvania. The Columbus Blue Jackets, the team for which John Gaudreau played, has announced that they will be streaming the service on their website to allow fans and supporters to pay their respects. The brothers were killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bicycles in New Jersey, just before their sister’s wedding.

The driver, Sean M. Higgins, is currently in jail awaiting his next court appearance. He is facing charges of death by auto, reckless driving, possession of an open container, and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle. Higgins has hired attorneys to represent him, and they have stated that it is too early in the legal process to make any statements outside of court. The judge has postponed the hearing to allow more time for preparation.

Outpouring of Support

The hockey community, from Columbus to South Jersey to Boston College, where the Gaudreau brothers played, is expected to come together to mourn the loss of these two young men. The Blue Jackets general manager, Don Waddell, has confirmed that the entire team will be in attendance at the funeral. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will also be present to pay his respects. Members of the community have paid tribute to the brothers in candlelight vigils in cities like Columbus, Ohio, and Calgary, Alberta.

Lewis Gross, the brothers’ longtime agent, expressed his deep sorrow and gratitude for having represented them for 15 years. He mentioned that the hockey may be over, but his commitment to John and Matt will endure for the rest of his life. Obituaries for the brothers suggest directing contributions to the John & Matthew Gaudreau Foundation, showing the lasting impact they have had on those around them. USA Hockey executive director Pat Kelleher also offered his condolences and prayers for the family during a recent event at the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

The tragic loss of the Gaudreau brothers has touched the hearts of many in the hockey community and beyond. Their legacy lives on through the outpouring of support, tributes, and the foundation set up in their honor. As the community continues to mourn, it is clear that John and Matthew Gaudreau will be remembered for their love of the game, their impact on those around them, and the joy they brought to so many lives.
