Newcastle fans are asking Ross Wilson to quickly sell the player who had a really bad game against West Brom.
Newcastle United fans have been asking the club to sell striker Nick Woltemade after his disappointing performance in the Carabao Cup against West Bromwich Albion.
The game started tough for the Magpies, going 1-0 down early when Isaac Price scored for West Brom. Newcastle fought back with goals just before and after halftime. Bazoumana Traore, who recently joined from Hoffenheim for £43 million, scored his first goal for the club in the 38th minute. Then, Harvey Barnes, who came on for Traore after the break, scored straight away.
West Brom didn’t give up and even thought they might take the game to penalties after Price scored his second goal with 13 minutes left. But Barnes was the hero again, scoring his second to secure Newcastle’s win and move them into the third round. This showed how important Barnes is to coach Matthias Jaissle.
On the other hand, Woltemade’s performance didn’t impress fans. This was his first game under Jaissle after being on the bench during the 2-2 draw against Liverpool. He struggled to make an impact, with only one shot on goal, five lost possessions, and just one successful dribble in 90 minutes. Many fans called on the club’s sporting director, Ross Wilson, to sell him.
One fan wrote, “Wish Newcastle would just take a hit and sell Woltemade for whatever we can or swap him or loan him.” Another agreed, saying, “Wicked cross by Dedic, sorry but we need to sell Woltemade.” A third added, “Woltemade has had another absolute stinker.”
Some supporters feel that Woltemade doesn’t fit Jaissle’s fast, pressing style, a concern they also had during Eddie Howe’s time at Newcastle. One said, “Really hate to say this but Nick Woltemade is not cut out for English football; it doesn’t suit his playstyle. It’s time to sell him. I really liked him too, but you can see it’s not working.” Another wrote, “Feel for Woltemade—he clearly lacks confidence and doesn’t fit the manager’s style. Would love to see him succeed, but I can’t see him lasting at Newcastle beyond next season.”
Woltemade started well after joining from Stuttgart for £69 million last summer, scoring four goals in his first five Premier League games. But since then, he’s scored just seven goals in 47 matches and has dropped down the pecking order at St James’ Park. His tall, relaxed style doesn’t match Jaissle’s energetic football, something seen clearly against West Brom.
With players like Yoane Wissa and Will Osula preferred in attack, Woltemade might be on his way out. According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Woltemade wants to leave the club before the September 1 deadline. Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have shown interest.
A move back to Germany could be just what he needs to find his confidence and form again, though it’s unlikely Newcastle will make back the £69 million they spent on him.
