Carlos Alcaraz pulls out of French Open with a sad announcement
Carlos Alcaraz has announced that he won’t be playing in this year’s French Open because of a wrist injury. He hurt his right wrist during a match against qualifier Otto Virtanen at the Barcelona Open. After the match, Alcaraz said he was pulling out of the rest of that tournament and later also withdrew from the Madrid Open for the second year in a row.
These back-to-back withdrawals worried fans who hoped he would still play at the French Open next month. Sadly, those worries have come true. Alcaraz shared a statement on social media saying he won’t play at the Italian Open in Rome or the French Open at Roland Garros.
He explained, “After the test results today, we decided it’s best to be cautious and skip Rome and Roland Garros while we watch how the injury improves to decide when I can return to the court. This is a tough time for me, but I’m sure I’ll come back stronger.”
Alcaraz is the two-time defending French Open champion, having won his first title in 2024 and then beating rival Jannik Sinner in an amazing final last year. The French Open also sent their best wishes, saying: “Some sad news as Carlos Alcaraz, our 2024 and 2025 champion, won’t be able to defend his title at Roland-Garros 2026 because of a wrist injury. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Carlos — we’ll miss you!”
With Alcaraz out, all eyes turn to Roland Garros, where Sinner hopes to complete the career Grand Slam, and Novak Djokovic, if healthy, will try to win a 25th Grand Slam title. Meanwhile, Alcaraz now has to work hard to be fully fit and ready for Wimbledon at the All England Club in late June.
