LeBron James shares a message about retiring after NBA play-offs loss
LeBron James had a quick answer when asked about his future after the LA Lakers were knocked out of the 2026 NBA Playoffs.
The Lakers lost 115-110 to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday, finishing the series with a 4-0 sweep in the Western Conference semi-finals.
James was the Lakers’ top scorer in Game 1, which the Thunder won 108-90 last Tuesday, and he scored 24 points in the final game at Crypto.com Arena.
But despite his efforts, he missed a crucial shot with only seconds left, and the Lakers ended up losing to the Thunder for the eighth time this season.
Oklahoma City will now face either the Minnesota Timberwolves or the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference finals, with their series tied at 2-2.
As for 41-year-old LeBron James, his future isn’t very clear.
After an incredible 23rd NBA season, he hasn’t said if he will retire or keep playing.
When reporters asked him “What’s next?” after the loss, James stayed thoughtful and said, “I don’t know. It’s still fresh from losing. I just don’t know what the future holds right now.”
LeBron is a four-time NBA champion and MVP, and has played more regular-season games than anyone else in history. He also has the most points scored in both the regular season and playoffs.
Known as “King James,” he’s also the highest career earner in the NBA, giving him plenty of options if he decides to play another season.
A lot of talk about his retirement this year comes from the fact that his contract with the Lakers ends this off-season.
While retiring now might make sense, he will become a free agent, meaning he could sign with the Lakers again or join another team if he wants to play longer, even into his mid-forties.
In other news, the New York Knicks swept the Philadelphia 76ers 4-0 in the Eastern Conference semi-finals, and the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic are tied 2-2 in their series.
