“Send him back” – Tottenham urged to end player’s “odd” deal as worries grow about relegation

Tottenham have been advised to end one player’s loan deal instead of signing him permanently.
It’s safe to say the 2025/26 season has been really tough for Spurs.
Less than a year after winning their first trophy in 17 years by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final, the London club is now fighting to avoid dropping out of the Premier League.
After drawing with Leeds United, Spurs sit 17th in the table, just two points ahead of rivals West Ham, with two games left to play.
If Spurs are relegated to the Championship, many players are expected to leave to stay in the Premier League or play abroad.
Spurs expert John Wenham thinks one player who should leave no matter what happens is young striker James Wilson, who joined on loan during the winter transfer window.
Wilson moved from Scottish club Hearts, despite interest from Arsenal, to play for Spurs’ Under-21 team. His loan deal reportedly comes with a £2.5 million buy option.
Even though Wilson has scored four goals in 11 appearances for the U21s, Wenham isn’t impressed and believes he should go back to Hearts this summer.
Talking to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I wonder about James Wilson.
“He came on loan from Hearts, who might win their first league title in decades, but instead came to play for our under-21s, which is a bit odd to me.
“I know there’s an option to buy him, but from what I’ve seen, I’d probably send him back.
“We have other strikers—like Will Lankshear, who has done really well on loan at Oxford—who I’d rate higher, along with Mason Melia and Dane Scarlett, as we look ahead as a club.”
Several players are likely to leave if Spurs get relegated, with one reportedly already agreeing to move on.
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who has lost favour at the club, is said to have agreed to return to Italy with Inter Milan after this season.
Also expected to leave if Spurs go down are Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur, as both have contracts ending this summer.
Centre-backs Micky Van de Ven and Cristian Romero could also be on their way out, with interest in both defenders growing in recent weeks.
