Liverpool is ready to let an unexpected player leave the club and bring in someone new this summer.
Liverpool is getting ready to make some big changes this summer, according to reports. The Reds haven’t been able to seriously challenge for the Premier League title in the 2025-26 season and are currently in fourth place with just two games left.
It’s been a year since the title celebration at Anfield, but this season, Arne Slot and Liverpool haven’t met expectations, even after spending a lot on new players. Signing Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Florian Wirtz hasn’t worked out as hoped just yet.
Because of this, Liverpool needs to rebuild during the transfer window. One important player from their title-winning team might be on the way out. Dutch forward Cody Gakpo scored 10 league goals when Liverpool won the title in 2024-25, Slot’s first year in charge. But this season, Gakpo has struggled, and Slot may be open to selling him.
TEAMtalk says Gakpo has had a tough time, not connecting well with Milos Kerkez on the left, looking predictable in attack, and sometimes keeping the energetic Rio Ngumoha out of the team. Big changes are expected on the wings this summer, with Mohamed Salah leaving and Federico Chiesa likely going back to Italy. Their insider, Graeme Bailey, says Gakpo could also be sold.
Liverpool is reportedly considering signing Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain and Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco, but bringing in just one new winger might depend on selling Gakpo first.
West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen is another player Liverpool is interested in. The 27-year-old has been a steady performer since joining Liverpool from PSV in 2023. He’s scored 50 goals in all competitions, helping the team win the Carabao Cup and last season’s league title. Even though he’s still scoring this season, some have criticized his overall performances, especially with the team not doing well.
Liverpool’s last two games as they try to secure a Champions League spot are against Europa League finalists Aston Villa on Friday night and Brentford on the final day.
