Jake Paul has announced his next boxing opponent and confirmed a $200 million deal for the fight.
Jake Paul says he’s agreed to his next fight, with a huge $200 million prize on the table, even though some people have been worried about his health lately.
Paul, who has a pro boxing record of 12 wins and 2 losses, hasn’t fought since he was knocked out in the sixth round by former two-time heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua last December. After that fight, Paul had two titanium plates put in and had some teeth pulled because Joshua broke his jaw in two places during their match in Miami.
Earlier this week, in an interview with journalist Ariel Helwani, the 29-year-old talked about his future in boxing. He said, “I’m getting new scans on my jaw soon to check how it’s healing. We’ll see what the doctors say. I hope to know when I can fight again, or even if I can. It does feel better each week, but I need to be cleared before I can spar. I’m staying fit and still enjoy some mitt work. I’m always training.”
But just two days after saying that, Paul surprised everyone by saying he and four-division world champ Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez might be set to fight for $200 million.
Paul told Betr, “Canelo, I have the $200 million for you — easy money. Jake vs Canelo, let’s make it happen. This is what fans have been waiting for. It’s the biggest fight boxing could see. Canelo said he’s down on the phone, so we’re going to do this. Sign the contract, Canelo. Much respect. Let’s make the biggest fight in boxing happen.”
Canelo, 35, is seen as one of the best fighters today, with 63 wins out of 68 fights. His three losses came against legends Floyd Mayweather Jr, Dmitry Bivol, and most recently, Terence Crawford.
Canelo and Paul have had some back-and-forth before, with Canelo telling fans last year not to pay attention to Paul and saying he only fights “real fighters.”
On May 9, it was announced that Canelo will fight undefeated WBC super-middleweight champ Christian Mbilli this fall, according to Top Rank’s president, Todd duBoef.
