Jamie Carragher sparks Mo Salah feud again, calling the Liverpool star selfish live on MNF
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has shared that he wasn’t surprised by Mohamed Salah’s harsh comments about Liverpool’s season.
Liverpool lost 4-2 to Aston Villa on Friday, a result that pushed Villa back into the Champions League and left Liverpool with a tough task to do the same, just a year after winning the Premier League.
Liverpool’s second season under manager Arne Slot has been disappointing. Salah, whose performance has dropped since signing a new contract, criticized the way the team is playing under Slot. This wasn’t the first time Salah spoke out; he had also expressed frustration after being left out of the squad before the Africa Cup of Nations.
Salah posted on Instagram between his last two games, saying, “Losing again this season hurts and isn’t fair to our fans. I want to see Liverpool become the strong, attacking team that everyone fears and wins trophies. That’s the kind of football I know and the team’s true identity.”
Carragher told Sky Sports on Monday that Salah’s words were expected. “I’m not surprised,” he said. “I said earlier that something else would come before the season ended, like when Ronaldo left Manchester United. I thought it might happen after the season, but it didn’t. Less than two years ago, I called Salah selfish for speaking out, and I still believe that. Liverpool have an important week ahead, and the focus should be on the team, not just Salah.”
Many fans have supported Salah online, but some former players, including Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney, have criticized the timing of his comments, if not what he said. Salah, 33, will leave Liverpool after their home game against Brentford on Sunday.
Carragher and former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol have both questioned if it was the right time for Salah to speak out, especially with a Champions League spot still up for grabs.
Liverpool is currently fifth, with three points left to play for. They’re the only team in the race for the Champions League spot that can’t rely on Villa winning the Europa League final on Wednesday. If Liverpool can’t catch up and finish fourth, a Villa win won’t help the team in sixth place qualify.
