Ruben Amorim is ready for the perfect new job just four months after leaving Man United.
Ruben Amorim is likely to return to coaching with a big European club this summer. After taking over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024, Amorim was let go as Manchester United manager in January. During his 14 months at Old Trafford, the Portuguese coach only won about 32% of his games, the lowest win rate for any permanent United manager.
Since leaving United, Amorim has taken some time off from football, which has made people wonder when he will manage again. Some reports say he might make a surprising return to the Premier League, with Crystal Palace reportedly interested in him as their manager after Oliver Glasner leaves at the end of the season.
But now, news has come out that Amorim is very close to becoming the new boss at another top European club—and it seems like a great fit. According to The Sun, Benfica wants him to replace Jose Mourinho, who is moving on to Real Madrid next season.
Even though Amorim has strong ties with Sporting Lisbon—where he won two league titles before joining United—he also has a history with Benfica from his playing days. He spent nine years as a player with Benfica, including loan spells at Braga, Benfica B, and a club in Qatar. He made 154 appearances for Benfica before retiring due to a serious knee injury.
Plus, Amorim is said to be good friends with Benfica’s president, Rui Costa, who was the club’s sporting director when Amorim was playing there.
If he takes the job, Amorim would be leading a team that, under Mourinho, finished the Portuguese league season unbeaten but still came third, missing out on Champions League spots.
