Harry Maguire was left “shocked” after missing out on England’s World Cup squad, and Thomas Tuchel is reportedly thinking hard about including a player who hasn’t played much this season.

Tuchel will reveal his 26-man World Cup squad at Wembley Stadium on Friday morning. Earlier this month, he submitted a provisional squad that featured Trent Alexander-Arnold, Danny Welbeck, Alex Scott, and Levi Colwill. Colwill, who has only played three times for Chelsea this season, might have a real chance of making the team.

Colwill was out for nearly 10 months after tearing his ACL in August 2025 but has impressed since his return this month. The 23-year-old made a comeback on May 4, coming off the bench in Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest. He also played well in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool and was one of Chelsea’s best in their FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City.

With Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi likely in the squad if fit, Colwill’s spot could put pressure on players like Harry Maguire and Dan Burn. Speaking to talkSPORT, Maguire said he was confident about playing a big part this summer but was left shocked and gutted by the decision to leave him out. He wished the team all the best.

Meanwhile, Manchester City’s John Stones has struggled for game time this season, making just eight league appearances as other defenders like Marc Guehi and Ruben Dias have been preferred. Stones, who has 87 England caps, is part of Tuchel’s leadership group but his place in the World Cup squad is uncertain.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was included in the provisional squad but has often been overlooked by Tuchel before. His chances improve with Ben White out due to a knee injury and Tino Livramento also having fitness issues.

On the other hand, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer haven’t been very consistent for their clubs, unlike Morgan Gibbs-White, who has scored 11 league goals for Nottingham Forest this year.

England’s final World Cup squad will be announced on Friday morning at Wembley, with the event starting around 9:45am BST.
