Marcus Rashford has shared his excitement after being called up to the England World Cup squad, taking a moment to thank those who stood by him during tough times—though interestingly, he didn’t mention one club in particular.

The 28-year-old, currently on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United, has had an amazing season with the La Liga champions, scoring 14 goals across all competitions. Barcelona haven’t yet decided to make his move permanent with the £26 million option in his loan deal, but it looks like Rashford might be leaving Old Trafford soon.

In fact, his relationship with his boyhood club seems strained, as he didn’t mention Manchester United in his recent social media post. Right after being named in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad, he thanked Unai Emery, Hansi Flick, Tuchel himself, Aston Villa, Barcelona, and England for believing in him when times got hard. Naturally, leaving out United caught people’s attention.

In a heartfelt message on Instagram after the call-up, Rashford wrote, “Today feels like a full-circle moment for me, from disappointment to joy. Missing out on the Euros squad helped me grow both as a player and as a person, and gave me something important to work toward.” He added, “Thank you so much for this chance, and I can’t wait to wear the shirt at the World Cup.”

Michael Carrick recently mentioned that Rashford’s future is still undecided, and the player himself hasn’t ruled out coming back to Manchester United. Back in April, Carrick said, “There are decisions to be made, and Marcus is part of that. Nothing’s decided yet, but it will be at the right time.”

After winning La Liga with Barcelona, Rashford was asked about what’s next but stayed open-ended. “This is exactly how I wanted it to end,” he said after scoring in the Clasico. “I’m really happy and just want to enjoy this moment. We’ll see what happens at the end of the season.”

Rashford was first called back to the England squad a year ago by Tuchel and has been a regular pick ever since, missing only one squad. Tuchel believes Rashford could become one of the best forwards in the world.

“He’s got everything—great finishing with both feet and his head, speed, strength, and explosiveness. There’s no limit for him,” Tuchel said. “But so far, his stats don’t fully match his potential. He knows he has to push himself more when it comes to goals and assists. He’s still young enough to make these choices, and if he doesn’t, he might regret it in the future.”

“For Marcus, the big message is to keep pushing himself hard. His limit is very high, probably higher than most others.”
