Anthony Gordon shares why he decided to learn Spanish after speaking it fluently at the Barcelona event.
Anthony Gordon amazed fans when he spoke fluent Spanish at his Barcelona unveiling.
On Friday, May 29, 25-year-old Gordon completed a £69.3 million move from Newcastle United to Barcelona, signing a five-year contract until 2031.
Before choosing Barcelona, the Everton academy graduate had also drawn interest from Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
The England winger, who will be part of Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup, took part in the unveiling event on Friday. He can’t officially become a Barcelona player until the transfer window opens on June 15, when all the final paperwork will be done. He also passed his medical on Thursday, May 28.
At the event, Gordon surprised everyone by speaking fluent Spanish, just like his fellow Liverpudlian and England teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold did when he joined Real Madrid last summer.
When asked about his Spanish skills, Gordon said, “There was a physio at Newcastle I talked to every day. I told him I wanted to play for Barca one day and started learning Spanish. I found out about Barcelona’s interest quite late, but as soon as I knew they were serious, I didn’t hesitate. Barca is the biggest club in the world. It’s been a dream since I was a kid.”
Barcelona announced the signing on their website, and Newcastle also confirmed the deal.
Talking to Newcastle’s website about his time in the North East, Gordon said he will always be a fan of the club. “I owe a lot to this club. When I arrived, I felt lost in both life and football. The club gave me a sense of belonging and identity. It helped me reach what I’ve always wanted to do. It put me on big stages and let me perform for the shirt.
“Since joining, I’ve improved a lot on the pitch, but Newcastle has also shaped the person I am today. It was really important to me to leave on good terms because I’ve loved every minute with Newcastle United. This is a special club I’ll never forget.”
During his time at Newcastle, Gordon scored 39 goals and made 28 assists in 152 games. He also helped the team win the 2025 Carabao Cup, ending a 70-year trophy drought for the club.
