Arne Slot said no to a big European club months before Liverpool let him go, and now reactions from the locker room are coming out.
A new report has revealed some surprising details behind Arne Slot’s unexpected sacking by Liverpool. It even says the Dutch coach turned down a big chance to manage a top European club so he could stay at Anfield earlier this season.
Slot, who led Liverpool to just their second Premier League title in 35 years in 2025, was let go on Saturday (May 30) after the Reds finished fifth this year. During the season, many fans—and even Mohamed Salah—called for the team to return to the exciting style of playing that Slot’s predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, was known for.
Liverpool released a long statement about Slot’s departure, saying it was a “difficult decision” but thanking him for his dedication and for guiding the club through a tough time after Diogo Jota’s tragic death last summer.
Slot leaves Liverpool with an impressive record: 66 wins, 18 draws, and 29 losses in 113 games. He’s one of only two managers to help Liverpool win the Premier League, alongside Klopp.
Despite the pressure from fans, Slot’s exit is a shock, especially since earlier in May he said he believed he would still be Liverpool’s manager next season. When asked about the rumors, he said, “I don’t think I’m deciding that alone. I have every reason to believe I’ll be Liverpool manager next season because I’m contracted and because of the talks we’re having.”
Slot is expected to receive a payout of around eight million euros (nearly £7 million). After his sacking, reports said he was “surprised” since the club had backed him just last week. The players were also reportedly shocked and expected him to stay on for 2026/27.
Although Slot is linked to the vacant AC Milan job after Massimiliano Allegri left, he’s not rushing to return to management. Earlier this year, he even turned down a chance to manage Ajax.
Bournemouth’s departing boss, Andoni Iraola, is expected to take over at Liverpool, with others like Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, Lens’ Pierre Sage, and Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeneß also being considered.
Liverpool’s statement praised Slot’s hard work, leadership, and achievements, highlighting his key role in winning their 20th league title—an amazing feat in his first season. They also thanked him for the compassion he showed during one of the club’s hardest moments after losing Diogo Jota.
The club made it clear that while they respect Slot and what he did, they believe the team needs a new direction to keep moving forward. They wish him well and said he and his family will always be welcome at Anfield.
