Virgil van Dijk speaks out for the first time after Arne Slot’s Liverpool firing

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has finally spoken out after the club’s decision to part ways with Arne Slot.
Even though Slot led Liverpool to a Premier League title in 2025, he was let go on Saturday, May 30. The club shared a detailed message thanking him for his hard work and for guiding the team through a tough time after the heartbreaking loss of Diogo Jota.
The statement said, “Arne showed so much kindness and strength during that difficult period, which really showed what kind of person he is. We wish him all the best in his coaching journey ahead and believe he’ll keep achieving great things. His legacy at Liverpool is secure and will be remembered for years to come.”
It also explained, “Our decision comes from the belief that the team needs a new direction right now. This doesn’t take away from the great job Arne has done or the respect we have for him. It’s just a sign that the club needs a fresh approach.”
Slot leaves with a record of 66 wins, 18 draws, and 29 losses in 113 games, becoming only the second manager after Jurgen Klopp to win the Premier League with Liverpool.
After finishing fifth last season and missing out on trophies, some fans were worried about the team’s slow style of play. Mohamed Salah even asked for the return of “heavy-metal football” earlier in May, saying, “I want to see Liverpool go back to being the exciting, attacking team that wins trophies.”
Slot hasn’t made an official statement yet but shared a message through journalist Fabrizio Romano, saying, “It’s been an amazing journey with Liverpool, and I’m so thankful we won the league last season.”
Andoni Iraola, who recently left Bournemouth after finishing sixth, is expected to take over at Anfield. Other names in the mix include Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeneß, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, and Lens’ Pierre Sage.
On May 31, Van Dijk posted a photo of himself and Slot on Instagram Story with the words: “We’ll never forget winning the Premier League in our first season together. Thank you, Trainer, and best of luck to you and your family.”
The club also highlighted how hard the decision was, praising Slot’s dedication and the success he brought. They noted how he embraced responsibility from day one, led them to the title, and showed great care during tough times.
In closing, the club said, “We’re grateful for everything Arne has done. He’ll always have a special place in Liverpool’s history as the coach who won us our 20th league title. We wish him all the best and know he’ll continue to succeed. He and his family will always be welcome at Anfield.”
