Ibrahima Konate’s surprising comment in his Liverpool farewell message changes the whole story.

Ibrahima Konate has shared some heartfelt words shortly after Liverpool officially announced he’s leaving the club. After five years since joining from RB Leipzig for £36m in the summer of 2021, the Liverpool defender will be leaving when his contract ends in June.

Although Konate had a tough start to the 2025/26 season, talks about extending his contract happened throughout the year, with both sides hoping to reach an agreement. But now it’s been confirmed that they couldn’t agree on new terms. Liverpool released a statement saying, “Liverpool FC can confirm Ibrahima Konate will leave the club when his contract expires this summer. We thank him for everything he contributed and wish him all the best for the future.”

During his time at Liverpool, Konate made 183 appearances across all competitions and played a big part in helping the club win their 20th Premier League title in the 2024/25 season. The news shocked and saddened many fans who hoped the 27-year-old defender would stay at Anfield. It seems Konate feels the same, as he shared a personal message on Instagram.

“I’m really sad I didn’t get to say goodbye to you all at the last game. I didn’t know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you,” he wrote.

His message shows he was taken by surprise by the decision not to renew his contract, which has added to fans’ frustrations.

In his statement, Konate also said: “Five years ago, I came here as a young player with big dreams. Now, I leave with memories I’ll cherish forever. Playing for this club has been an honor. We’ve shared amazing moments — the highs and lows, trophies, challenges, lifelong friendships, and heartbreaking times like losing our brother Diogo.

“Losing my father this year was one of the hardest moments in my life, but through it all, my commitment to this club never wavered. During the toughest times, I gave everything for this badge.

“Thanks to my teammates, coaches, staff, and everyone behind the scenes for helping me grow every day.

“And to the fans… thank you for your love, energy, and incredible support. Anfield is truly special, and playing in front of you was something I always treasured.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. I love you all and will carry Liverpool with me everywhere I go.

“This isn’t an easy goodbye, but it’s time for a new challenge and a new chapter. See you again soon, Inshallah. YNWA.”

With Liverpool also looking for a new manager after parting ways with Arne Slot, it’s unlikely they will sign a new center back right away. Instead, they might wait until after the World Cup this summer to think about their options.

One player linked to Liverpool after Konate’s departure is academy graduate Jarell Quansah, who moved to Bayer Leverkusen last summer. He didn’t play much during Slot’s first season but could return since his £35m transfer reportedly includes a buy-back clause of around £70m this summer, which will drop to about £50m in 2027.

It’s also suggested that with Joe Gomez staying at the club next season, Liverpool might look to young defenders Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni to fill Konate’s spot in the squad.
