Bayern Munich are looking into a transfer for a Liverpool star, sparking surprising talk just days after Iraola took charge.
Bayern Munich is reportedly thinking about a surprising move involving a Liverpool player, which has given Andoni Iraola his first big decision as Liverpool’s new manager.
After Arne Slot was let go, former Bournemouth coach Iraola was named Liverpool boss. Even though he was just confirmed yesterday (June 4), he might already face his first challenge.
Seventeen-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha caught Bayern’s attention after a strong debut season at Anfield. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Bayern is targeting Ngumoha this summer as they want to strengthen their left wing, even though Luis Diaz had a fantastic season with them, helping Bayern win two domestic trophies and reach the Champions League semi-finals.
Ngumoha, who has a contract with Liverpool until 2028, knows about Bayern’s interest, but Liverpool has made it clear he’s not for sale. The young player appeared 31 times last season, scoring two goals and providing one assist. He’s currently with the England squad, helping Thomas Tuchel prepare for the World Cup.
Liverpool also want to strengthen their left side this summer and have shown interest in RB Leipzig’s forward Yan Diamonde. They have contacted Leipzig about the Ivory Coast international, who is under contract until 2030. However, Leipzig wants around £112 million and says he’s not for sale.
Iraola has said that he’s excited to give young players a chance. Ngumoha is one of Liverpool’s brightest young talents right now. Talking to the club’s media, the Spanish coach explained the importance of developing players:
“Things have moved quickly since the season ended. We’re thinking about the next steps. Now that we know what’s going on, I want to get ready. With the World Cup happening, we’ll have a chance to work closely with some young players. Many senior players will be out or arrive late because of the World Cup, so this is a great chance to get to know Academy players and others who have been out on loan. They’ll be key for the start of pre-season and the American tour.
“This works well for us because it gives us important info before making decisions ahead of the season. Senior players who played in the World Cup have been under pressure and deserve a rest. Meanwhile, young players will get valuable minutes and training time. Some we know well from playing against Liverpool before, but others haven’t had many minutes and need this opportunity. These sessions and games will help us decide how to move forward.”
