Iran might have to break an important FIFA rule at the World Cup because of a decision from the United States.

Iran traveled to North America to join the World Cup, which is being hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, even though there is still conflict happening in the Middle East. Earlier this year, the US and Israel carried out airstrikes against Iran, and many wondered if Iran would even take part in the tournament.

Originally, Iran’s training base was supposed to be in the US, but it was moved to Mexico after the US refused to host them. Iran also asked to move their three group matches to Mexico, but FIFA said no, explaining it was due to logistical reasons. Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed that FIFA wouldn’t allow the matches to be moved from the original locations.

So, all of Iran’s games will be played in the US, but their players and staff will only enter and leave the country on the days they have matches. This setup could make Iran break a strict FIFA rule. According to FIFA, each team’s head coach must hold a press conference at the match venue the day before the game. Iran’s coach, Amir Ghalenoei, would not be able to do this if the rule is strictly followed.

It’s unclear if Iran might use “force majeure” (unavoidable circumstances) to avoid penalties for breaking the rule. The US has agreed to give visas to players and necessary support staff, with approvals announced last Friday. However, Iranian media say that 15 other officials, including Iran’s Football Association president Mehdi Taj, have been denied visas so far.

The Iran Football Association says they will take this issue up with FIFA and want the organization to step in. They claim the US government is making a political move by refusing visas to important team officials. They’ve asked FIFA to help get these visas for the key staff members who are needed by the team.

Iran’s first World Cup game will be on June 15 against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in California. They will then play Belgium at the same stadium on June 21, followed by their last Group G match against Egypt at Lumen Field in Seattle on June 26.
