Why young star Kennet Eichhorn said no to Liverpool’s offer, even though the club tried hard
Liverpool recently tried hard to sign one of Europe’s most exciting young players but were turned down. The Reds are planning a big team makeover under their new manager, Andoni Iraola, who took over after Arne Slot’s departure.
One of their top targets, 16-year-old Kennet Eichhorn from Hertha Berlin, has caught a lot of attention. Eichhorn had a great first season, playing 18 games and helping his team finish seventh in the 2.Bundesliga. His smart and calm performances have made many clubs interested, including Liverpool.
Liverpool reportedly made the best financial offer, but Eichhorn chose to stay in Germany. Even though some German clubs offered less money, he prefers to continue his development at home. Bayer Leverkusen is keen to sign him permanently, and RB Leipzig is also hopeful.
Eichhorn, who became the youngest scorer in the German Cup, will turn 17 in July. However, due to new rules after the UK left the EU, Liverpool wouldn’t be able to officially sign him until he turns 18. Unfortunately, they can’t even sign him now and loan him out, and pre-contract deals are rare in Europe.
As BBC’s Dale Johnson explained, unless Eichhorn has a UK passport, Liverpool can’t sign him before July 2027. Because of this, and his wish to stay in Germany, it seems Liverpool will miss out on adding this promising talent to their squad for now.
