Ruben Amorim is now the top choice for a big European club after leaving Man Utd.
Ruben Amorim is now the top pick to become the new manager of a big European club, just a few months after being let go by Manchester United.
He was sacked in January, only 14 months after taking over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024. During his time at Old Trafford, the Portuguese coach only won about 32% of his games, the lowest win rate ever for a permanent United manager.
Since then, Amorim has mostly stayed out of the spotlight, with only a few hints about possible new jobs in the news. But now, it looks like the 41-year-old could be returning to coaching soon, as he’s been named the leading candidate to manage AC Milan.
The Italian club is searching for a new coach after firing Massimiliano Allegri in May following a disappointing season where they missed out on Champions League qualification. The club called the season an “unequivocal failure.”
Several names have been linked to the job recently, including former United coach Ralf Rangnick, who was expected to join Milan as a technical director. However, according to Italian news source La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan and Amorim have already talked, and the club is ready to offer him a two-year contract, with an option for a third year.
Amorim’s rise comes after Rangnick, who is currently coaching in North America with Austria, signed a new long-term deal to stay as Austria’s national team coach until 2028, so he’s off the table.
This clears the way for Amorim, pushing out former Crystal Palace boss Glasner, who was once a favorite. Glasner was supported by Rangnick but has now dropped behind Amorim after Rangnick’s decision.
Even though his time at United wasn’t great, Milan sees Amorim as the right fit because of his style of play. The club’s owner, Getty Cardinale, mentioned they want a coach with players who have strength, aggression, and the ability to quickly win the ball back—qualities Amorim is known for.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also says Amorim is interested in the job and is open to Milan’s terms, so it looks like it’s just a matter of time before he’s officially named the new AC Milan manager.
