Erling Haaland and his teammates from Norway showed off their fun new “Viking row” celebration after their win against Senegal – and it’s already one of the coolest moments from the 2026 World Cup.
On Monday night, Norway secured their spot in the round of 32 with two goals from Haaland and one from Marcus Holmgren Pedersen, finishing with an exciting 3-2 win.
To celebrate, the whole Norwegian team, including their coach Stale Solbakken, sat down on the MetLife Stadium field after the game and pretended to row a boat together.
In the video below, you can see captain Martin Odegaard holding a mallet and striking a drum twice while everyone in the stands and on the field rowed in sync. The players lined up like a Viking longboat and followed the drumbeat — kind of like Iceland’s famous “Viking Clap” from Euro 2016.
Haaland talked about the “Viking row” after the match: “I saw it online, and it went viral. Martin [Ødegaard] asked me before the game, ‘Should we join in?’ I said, ‘If we win, why not?’”
Coach Solbakken added that it was “fun for the fans,” but they won’t keep doing it after the World Cup. “This can be a cool thing during the tournament,” he said.
Before the game, hundreds of fans in Times Square joined in the rowing and shouted “Ro!” with each drumbeat.
Norway will face France in their last group game on June 26. Talking about this match, Haaland wasn’t too focused on it: “I don’t care too much about that game now. We’re through, and that’s what matters. France will probably win — maybe even the whole tournament.”
Haaland has had an amazing start to the World Cup this summer. Lionel Messi leads with five goals from two games, while Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are close behind with four goals each.
“I’m really enjoying it,” Haaland said after Monday’s match. “I’ve loved playing for Norway ever since I started in 2019.”
