Andre Onana’s future at Man Utd gets interesting as he and the club have ‘reached an agreement’ for a summer move.

Andre Onana isn’t in Manchester United’s plans for the upcoming season, and reports say it’s already been decided that he’ll be leaving.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Turkish club Trabzonspor. He was allowed to leave last summer after some high-profile mistakes, which led United to bring in Senne Lammens.
When Onana joined in 2023, he was seen as the perfect replacement for David de Gea. United’s then-football director, John Murtough, even called him “one of the world’s best goalkeepers” and believed he would improve even more over time. But now, it looks like his future at Old Trafford is uncertain, and another loan move could be coming soon.
On Thursday, it was reported that Trabzonspor and Onana have agreed to extend his loan for another season, with his lawyer currently reviewing the contract. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano added that a verbal agreement has been made, with Trabzonspor paying a loan fee to United. Last time, Trabzonspor covered all of Onana’s wages, which had dropped from around £170,000 per week to £120,000 after United missed out on European competition.
Earlier this year, The Guardian shared that Onana wanted to prove himself again as United’s No.1 once he returned from loan. He believed he’d get the chance to show his value, but clearly, United don’t plan to bring him back into the first team after Senne Lammens had a strong debut season.
Onana was loaned out just days after making two mistakes in United’s Carabao Cup loss to League Two side Grimsby Town.
Former United keeper Edwin van der Sar, who had a great career at the club, has spoken about why Onana struggled. He said he worked with Onana for a few years at Ajax, where Onana started as third-choice goalkeeper but was eager to become number one. Van der Sar thinks Onana has amazing skills—like great reflexes and footwork—but sometimes makes odd mistakes that surprise people.
He added that a team needs stability, especially in goal, so defenders can trust their keeper. But Manchester United hasn’t been stable for years, with many changes in defenders, midfielders, and coaches. This made it hard for new players, including goalkeepers, to settle in and meet high expectations.
Van der Sar said he really believed Onana would succeed when he arrived. Having worked with him at Ajax and watched him perform well in Italy and in a Champions League final, he thought it would be a perfect fit.
