Spain star has ‘one of the toughest days’ ever after being ruled out of the World Cup due to a ‘needless challenge.’
Spain has made it to the knockout stage of the World Cup, finishing first in Group H after their 1-0 win against Uruguay. But sadly, one of their key players won’t be playing for the rest of the tournament.
Luis de la Fuente’s team came into the World Cup as strong contenders after winning the European Championship in 2024. Still, La Roja have been warming up slowly because some players weren’t fully fit when the games started, like when Mexico beat South Africa.
Before the tournament, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams had some injury concerns but managed to recover enough to join the squad. Unfortunately, Williams got hurt again in the win over Uruguay, ending his World Cup journey. The Athletic Bilbao star shared an emotional message on social media to explain the tough news.
The 23-year-old said, “Today is one of the hardest days of my life. I got injured again after a very difficult year dealing with pubic symphysis pain. Though that pain won many battles, it didn’t win the war. I kept pushing through with hard work, sacrifice, and responsibility.
“It was a year and a half full of pain, sadness, uncertainty, and worry. I didn’t know when I’d play without pain or return to a normal life. Sometimes, even simple things like going to the bathroom or getting in and out of the car hurt a lot.
“Yesterday, I got injured again after a player, upset and frustrated, made a move that could have been avoided. It was painful and unnecessary.”
Williams and Spain haven’t said exactly which challenge caused the injury, but late in the game, Nicolás de la Cruz made a tough tackle on him, which led to some clashes between the teams.
Though he’s sad about the injury and missing the rest of the tournament, Williams stays positive and determined. He added, “This won’t stop me. I believe God has a plan for me, and I’ll keep fighting to do what I love most: playing soccer, feeling happy, and bringing joy to others.
“Thank you so much for all your support. The story isn’t over—we’ll see each other again soon in this World Cup.”
