Uruguay players faced tough treatment after a disappointing World Cup run.

Uruguay’s football team faced some tough consequences from their football association after their disappointing World Cup performance. Marcelo Bielsa’s squad didn’t win any games in the tournament. After drawing two matches, they were knocked out following a loss to Spain in the group stage.

The game against Spain was chaotic. Veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera had to come off at half-time after letting a shot by Alex Baena slip past him. To make things worse, Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte was taken off on a stretcher with a knee injury that could keep him out for a long time.

Before the match, there were reports that some Uruguay players were unhappy with Bielsa’s training methods. They wanted big changes to the team’s tactics, but nothing was changed.

Now, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) has made their feelings clear about the team’s poor showing. According to El Pais and Tenfield, a private flight back to Montevideo was cancelled because of the early exit. Instead, the players and staff had to fly home on separate commercial flights with different routes and stops.

After the loss, Bielsa looked frustrated and was short with a reporter during a quick interview. The usually respected coach simply said, “You’re welcome,” and left.

Bielsa, who has inspired many and coached Argentina and Chile in past World Cups, took over Uruguay in May 2023. He led the team to the Copa America semi-finals the following year but didn’t have success at this World Cup. This was his second time being knocked out in the group stage at a World Cup.

In his press conference after the game, Bielsa was very honest, saying his time with Uruguay was a “complete failure.” He admitted that without good results, any coach’s efforts don’t matter much. He said, “Fourth place in the World Cup Qualifiers was worthless, third place in the Copa América was equally meaningless, and this performance doesn’t need further explanation.”

Uruguay, ranked 16th in the world, finished last in their group’s third-placed teams with just two points, behind Scotland, South Korea, and Iran. Bielsa’s record with Uruguay stands at 15 wins, 16 draws, and 8 losses. His contract is ending soon, and it looks like he won’t be staying on as coach.
