Argentinian footballer’s wife and two children have sadly died in the earthquake, says club in a statement.

Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo faced a heartbreaking loss this week when powerful earthquakes hit Venezuela. Sadly, his wife, Yanina Maranella, and their two young children, Aaron and Ainhoa, were among the victims.

The 38-year-old had been searching desperately for his family after the apartment building where they lived collapsed during the twin earthquakes on Wednesday. At the time, Trejo was in Caracas playing a league match with his team, Deportivo La Guaira. His brother and father quickly traveled to Playa Grande to help in the search.

On Instagram, Trejo wrote, “Our building in Playa Grande collapsed. I don’t know anything about my family. Please pray for them and share this message in case someone saw them. I want to believe they weren’t there.” Unfortunately, on Saturday, rescuers found the bodies of his wife and children.

Before the news came, Trejo had shared a photo of himself with his family, holding on to hope they would be found safe. Deportivo La Guaira shared a message on Sunday, expressing their sorrow: “We join Lucas in mourning the loss of Yanina, Aaron, and Ainhoa. Our thoughts are with Lucas and his loved ones.”

Former Venezuelan player Edson Tortolero also posted about the tragedy, asking for respect and prayers for Trejo’s family during this difficult time.

The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, have caused massive damage, with an estimated 6.76 million people affected. Official reports say around 1,430 people have died, and about 50,000 are still missing.
