LeBron James surprises everyone by deciding to retire, and his possible next team is revealed after he leaves the LA Lakers.
LeBron James has reportedly decided to leave the LA Lakers as a free agent and plans to keep playing in the NBA with a new team. Even though he will turn 42 during the 2026-27 season, retirement isn’t on his mind yet as he looks forward to the next chapter of his amazing career.
LeBron has been picked for the NBA All-Star team 22 times, making the team every year since 2005. He has won four NBA MVP awards, a record only beaten by legends like Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Known as one of the greatest players ever, LeBron holds records for the most career points, most minutes played, and most All-Star appearances. He has an impressive career average of 26.8 points per game.
With the Lakers, he led the team to the 2020 NBA Championship and made history last season by playing alongside his oldest son, Bronny James. Overall, LeBron has won four NBA titles and three Olympic gold medals with Team USA.
ESPN says LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, has told the Lakers they can move on without LeBron, who plans to continue playing for a different team in 2026-27. LeBron is expected to be one of the most wanted free agents this offseason, with many teams interested.
Early reports show the Golden State Warriors are leading the chase, but the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, and Miami Heat are also in the mix. ESPN adds that Golden State is working hard to sign the 41-year-old and is also looking at bringing in Anthony Davis from the Washington Wizards. Draymond Green has turned down his $27.6 million player option and may be open to a lower salary to help the Warriors sign James or Davis.
If LeBron joins Golden State, he would reunite with his close friend Green and could team up with Stephen Curry for the first time. The two stars faced off in four straight NBA Finals between 2015 and 2018, where Curry’s Warriors won three titles. LeBron also shares a strong bond with Davis, after winning the 2020 NBA Championship together with the Lakers.
