Former Liverpool player, who hasn’t played in 15 months, asked to cancel his contract.

Stefan Bajcetic, a Liverpool midfielder who’s been out of the spotlight lately, has reportedly been asked to end his contract early so he can join a new club. The 21-year-old hasn’t played a competitive game since May 2025, when he was on loan at Spanish side Las Palmas. His last match for Liverpool was back in April 2024, coming on as a substitute in a 4-2 win over Tottenham.
Bajcetic joined Liverpool from Celta Vigo when he was just 16, one of the last young overseas players to move to an English club before the Brexit rules changed. He made his breakthrough during the 2022/23 season, playing 11 Premier League games and catching the eye of manager Jurgen Klopp. Unfortunately, injuries have held him back since then.
He suffered an adductor tear late in the 2022/23 season, then spent much of the following year sidelined with a calf injury. After returning from his loan at Las Palmas, he needed hamstring surgery, which meant he missed the entire last season. Although he hasn’t played in pre-season, he’s been training with Liverpool’s first team under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
Bajcetic, who has represented Spain at youth level, has been linked with moves away from Liverpool—both loans and permanent transfers. Recently, his old club Celta Vigo has shown interest, according to local reports. They say Bajcetic isn’t in Iraola’s plans this summer and is free to leave. But Celta want him to agree with Liverpool to end his contract early.
The good news for Bajcetic is that he’s reportedly closer than ever to returning to La Liga, although he would likely start with Celta’s reserve and youth squads to build up his fitness. Another report suggests Celta might even loan him to Germany’s Fortuna Düsseldorf in the third division, where he’s been described as “perfectly fit physically.”
Back in summer 2024, Bajcetic spoke honestly about how tough it has been dealing with injuries—not just physically but mentally too. “Going on the field every day is hard because you see your teammates playing, and you want to be there with them,” he said. “It’s really tough, training alone in the gym sometimes, but it only makes you stronger.”
Now, Bajcetic will be hoping for a fresh start in Spain if he gets the chance to leave Liverpool this summer.
