Manchester United is saving up their transfer money to go after their top midfield target.

Manchester United are said to be saving a big chunk of money to sign Aurelien Tchouameni this summer. After missing out on West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, they now need to rethink their midfield plans.

Tottenham has agreed to pay £85 million for Fernandes—a price United weren’t willing to match for him. They also cooled their interest in Elliot Anderson when they found out he’d cost around £116 million. Still, United might break their club transfer record to bring in a top midfielder this summer.

Michael Carrick is focused on strengthening the midfield, with at least two new players expected to join the first team. United have already agreed to pay an initial £35 million for Ederson from Atalanta and are ready to spend big if the right player comes along.

They prefer someone with Premier League experience and are interested in Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha is also on their list, but Real Madrid’s Tchouameni remains their dream signing.

Football Transfers remind us that Tchouameni has always been United’s top target. However, it’s unsure if Real Madrid’s new coach, Jose Mourinho, will let the French player go. Even if he does, Tchouameni might have to accept a lower salary to make the move happen.

Since Tchouameni is currently at the World Cup and will get some rest afterward, any deal for him probably won’t happen until late in the transfer window. This means United might have to wait nervously to see if they can sign their dream player before the deadline.

In a recent video, United legend Rio Ferdinand said the club is “holding money back” just in case Tchouameni becomes available. He was surprised to hear about Fernandes’ big move to Spurs and thinks United and Arsenal are being careful not to overpay.

Ferdinand said, “I think Manchester United are saving their money for one player, and that’s Tchouameni. If he becomes available, they can’t miss out. They might let other players slip away if the price isn’t right.”
