Reports from Italy say Real Madrid have reached out to Scott McTominay’s team about a possible move to the Bernabeu, as his future at Napoli remains uncertain. McTominay has been impressive since joining Napoli from Manchester United in the summer of 2024. He is now in the third year of his four-year contract with the Italian club.

Back in August, Napoli reportedly wanted to offer the Scotland star a long-term contract until 2030, with an option for an extra year, but so far, nothing has been finalized. While talks have slowed down, Real Madrid have made inquiries about McTominay’s situation, according to Il Mattino. The report also mentions that several Premier League clubs might show interest in the 29-year-old midfielder, who was linked to a return to England last summer.

If McTominay does join Real Madrid, he would reunite with former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, who gave him his first senior game against Arsenal in the 2016-17 season. Mourinho has often praised McTominay, calling him “my boy” when talking about players he enjoys coaching.

Mourinho’s respect for McTominay was so strong that he created the Manager’s Player of the Year award in 2018 just to honor the midfielder’s fantastic season. McTominay, who joined United at age five and made 255 appearances there, has always been thankful to Mourinho for giving him his big break.

On the High Performance Podcast, McTominay shared an emotional story about their last meeting on Mourinho’s final day at United. He said they still keep in touch, with Mourinho often texting him after good games, giving him encouragement.

“On the day he left, I saw him in the corridor and he invited me in. I didn’t know what to say. I was gutted. It was hard,” McTominay said. “He means so much to me and gave me all the dreams I could have wished for. I just thanked him and wished him luck. We still chat sometimes. If I’ve done well, he texts ‘well done kid,’ like he always calls me. Those were great times, and I’m really grateful for everything he did for me.”
