The important green jacket rules Rory McIlroy has to follow as Masters champion when he shows up at Wimbledon in his outfit

Rory McIlroy showed up at Wimbledon rocking his famous Masters jacket, but he has to stick to some pretty strict rules when wearing it.

Back in April, Rory ended his Masters struggles by winning at Augusta National for the second year in a row. That made him one of only four players ever to pull off this amazing achievement—the last being Tiger Woods.

The Northern Irish golfer stayed calm despite a late challenge from Cameron Young, Justin Rose, and Scottie Scheffler, and once again took home the iconic green jacket.

Since his first Masters win in 2025, which completed his career Grand Slam after 11 years, McIlroy has enjoyed taking the jacket with him wherever he goes.

This year looks no different—he was spotted wearing the jacket as he arrived at Wimbledon’s Royal Box on Centre Court with his wife, Erica Stoll, for day three of the tournament.

But Rory has to follow some strict rules about wearing the jacket outside Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. After his first Masters win, he explained, “You have to bring it back. Only the champion can take the green jacket off the premises for one year.”

When asked where he keeps it, he said, “Just in my wardrobe.”

But that doesn’t mean he can wear it anytime or anywhere. He explained there are lots of do’s and don’ts: “You have to wear a certain shirt, a club tie, specific trousers… only dress shoes, no trainers.”

Rory wasn’t the only Ryder Cup star in the Royal Box on Wednesday. Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, and Luke Donald were there too, plus Saltburn actor Richard E. Grant, Game of Thrones star Charles Dance, broadcasting legend Sir Trevor McDonald, and nine-time Wimbledon champ Martina Navratilova.

Earlier in the week, Sir David Beckham was spotted there with his mum, alongside Celia Imrie, Tess Daly, Ronan Keating, and Mollie King.

But Beckham and some of the Ryder Cup players probably weren’t thrilled to hear about Wimbledon’s strict rules on watching the World Cup while at the tournament.

With England playing DR Congo at 5pm Wednesday, right during Wimbledon matches, McIlroy and his European teammates will have to come up with a clever plan if they want to catch the game at SW19.
