Scotland World Cup star could make surprising move to Man Utd

Manchester United might be interested in signing one of Scotland’s standout players from the World Cup.

On Wednesday night, Scotland faced a tough defeat, losing 3-0 to Brazil at the Miami Stadium. Two goals from Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior and one from Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha made things difficult for Scotland, dropping them down the list of best third-placed teams.

Some Scottish players haven’t performed as well as expected during their first three World Cup games, especially former United midfielder Scott McTominay. But one Scottish player has caught United’s eye.

According to The Sun’s Samuel Luckhurst, Angus Gunn might be a target for United after his solid performances for Scotland in North America.

Gunn, 30, was released by Nottingham Forest at the end of the 2025/26 season but stayed Scotland’s first-choice goalkeeper in all three group matches. Over those games, he kept one clean sheet against Haiti but conceded one goal to Morocco and three to Brazil.

Fun fact: Gunn started out in City’s academy when Jason Wilcox, now United’s director of football, was a coach there. He’s also played for Norwich City, Southampton, and Stoke City before joining Nottingham Forest last season, where he made just one appearance.

United wouldn’t necessarily need him as the starting keeper, but reports say they’re looking for an experienced goalie because they plan to sell both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir this summer.

Another goalie linked to United is Karl Darlow, whose contract with Leeds United expires next week. However, since Darlow is still talking to Leeds about a new deal, it’s not clear if he’ll be available for free.

Right now, Onana is set to join United’s pre-season training in two weeks after his loan with Turkish club Trabzonspor last season. He might play in some of the pre-season matches, but the plan seems to be to sell him during the summer.

Bayindir is likely to return to Turkey, with Besiktas showing interest. He played six Premier League games for United last season but didn’t do very well, conceding 11 goals.

Bayindir was also at the World Cup with Turkey, but after surprising losses to Australia and Paraguay, he and his team are now out of the tournament. This means Bayindir might be available for most of United’s pre-season after a required three-week break.
