Manny Pacquiao is facing backlash for a video with Ricky Hatton that many say is ‘totally disrespectful.’
Manny Pacquiao has faced quite a bit of criticism recently for sharing a video online of Ricky Hatton.
Back in September 2025, the sports world was deeply shocked and saddened when Ricky Hatton passed away at just 46 years old. A pre-inquest review in March revealed that Hatton had taken his own life, leaving many heartbroken. He was loved by fans everywhere and left behind amazing memories from his boxing career.
Ricky Hatton was a true champion, winning several world titles in two weight classes with an incredible record. He won 45 of his 48 fights, including big wins over the talented Kostya Tszyu in 2005 and Paulie Malignaggi in 2008. Known as ‘The Hitman,’ Hatton even faced some of boxing’s all-time greats. He lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007 and later to Manny Pacquiao 18 months after that.
One of the most talked-about fights in recent boxing history saw Pacquiao knock Hatton out in the second round to claim the light welterweight title in Las Vegas. After that fight, the two shared a friendly and respectful rivalry. So, many fans were surprised and upset when Pacquiao posted a video of that knockout with the caption: “Was an honor sharing the ring with the great Ricky Hatton.”
Fans of Hatton found the post disrespectful. One wrote, “Totally disrespectful video.” Another said, “Delete this. Poor taste.” Some felt it wasn’t a proper way to honor Hatton, with comments like, “You honor him by showing footage of him being brutally KOed? Are you serious?” and “Whoever manages this account could’ve posted the first minute of the fight too, out of respect.”
Although Pacquiao received criticism, it’s clear he deeply respected Hatton. After Hatton’s death was confirmed, Pacquiao shared heartfelt words: “I am very saddened by Ricky Hatton’s passing. He was not only a great fighter but also a brave and kind person. We shared unforgettable moments in boxing, and I will always remember the respect and sportsmanship he showed. Ricky fought bravely in life, and we were all lucky to be part of his journey. My prayers and condolences go to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.”
Hatton also expressed respect for Pacquiao. Before Pacquiao’s July 2025 fight against Mario Barrios, Hatton shared his thoughts, wondering about Pacquiao’s reasons for returning but praising his legendary career: “For someone so iconic, who’s achieved so much and made so much money, why does he need this? If he lost, it would be a tragedy for boxing. Manny Pacquiao was the best pound-for-pound fighter and won many championships, but he’d been retired for years.”
Pacquiao gave a great performance in that fight, which ended in a majority draw, with Barrios keeping his WBC welterweight title.
