Man City faces a huge 180-point penalty after being found guilty of 115 charges
Danny Mills thinks Manchester City should start every season for the next nine years with a 20-point penalty. He’s been quite open about his thoughts on his old club. Mills played for City from 2004 to 2009 and is the latest former player to comment on the recent ruling.
On September 25, it was reported that City broke 114 out of 115 financial rules they were accused of, which could cause big problems for the club’s future. City plans to appeal the decision made by an independent commission about the Premier League financial rule breaches from 2009 to 2018.
There’s been a lot of talk lately about what kind of punishment City might get. On talkSPORT Breakfast, Mills said if City cheated for nine years, they should face a 20-point deduction each season going forward—a total of 180 points over nine seasons.
Some have suggested relegating City to the EFL, but Mills disagrees. He says City would quickly bounce back, which would limit chances for other teams to get promoted. Also, smaller clubs wouldn’t gain much financially from playing City because of stadium sizes and attendance.
Mills added that it’s a tough situation because the cheating goes so far back. There’s no perfect solution, and other clubs might complain about how the ruling affects them. So, Mills believes handing City a big points penalty each season they cheated might be the most practical way to handle it moving forward.
