A video of Chido Obi training against Jeremie Frimpong’s brother goes viral, especially since he hasn’t played in the first team for a whole year.
Exciting clips of Manchester United young talent Chido Obi training have been making waves online as he’s still missing from the first team. After their 1-0 loss to Wrexham in the first pre-season friendly, United bounced back with a strong 5-0 win over Danish team Rosenborg on July 24.
Since many senior players are still on vacation after the World Cup, the squad for that match featured a lot of academy players, including the promising JJ Gabriel. Obi, who joined from Arsenal in 2024 and quickly became part of the first team, was one of the youngsters who got game time in the big win.
Obi made his senior debut on February 16, 2025, coming on late for Casemiro in a 1-0 loss at Tottenham. He’s played in seven more first-team games but has since been sidelined, with his last appearance coming off the bench in a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on May 25, 2025. The Rosenborg friendly gave fans a small look at his progress, and now new training footage with the Seedorf Football Academy has been shared online, impressing many people.
Some social media accounts mistakenly said Obi was training with Liverpool’s Jeremie Frimpong, but it’s actually his younger brother, Wesley, who appears alongside him. Wesley, who played last season for LASK Amateurs Upper Austria and is currently without a club, is also training at the Seedorf Academy.
In the video, Obi is seen doing drills with a water tube over his shoulders, then taking on Wesley and a goalkeeper in attacking challenges. The 18-year-old skillfully gets past both multiple times and scores some great goals.
One United fan commented: “We need to bring him into the team fast. He could be a deadly striker with the right guidance.” Another said: “Some of these finishes are so good.” And another added: “This kid’s going places. He has the talent, the attitude, and works hard. He’s going to be a real threat.”
Obi was first promoted to the first team by former manager Ruben Amorim after struggles from Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. But despite Hojlund leaving for Napoli and Zirkzee’s continued challenges, Obi hasn’t made an appearance this season.
Reports say United has paused his first-team chances to help him improve some parts of his game. The club wants him to work on his off-the-ball movement so he can compete regularly in the tough Premier League.
With the promising signs from Obi and other young players, fans might finally see more of this exciting forward and other academy stars in the season ahead.
