Amazing Rey Mysterio detail noticed after WWE star joined Ryan Garcia’s ring walk
WWE legend Rey Mysterio was part of Ryan Garcia’s team as he walked to the ring before his fight against Conor Benn – and fans quickly noticed a small but important detail.
Though Garcia was born in California, he has Mexican roots through his grandparents. Mexico’s biggest wrestling star, Mysterio, walked with him to the ring as part of his group. The WWE icon was wearing a white neck brace, which made some people worry about his health – but there’s a good reason for it.
As Mysterio nears the end of his wrestling career, he’s not as active in the ring and now works as the general manager for Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA), a promotion that WWE partnered with and acquired last April.
In December, Mysterio made his AAA in-ring debut by teaming with fellow masked wrestler Rey Fenix to beat his real-life son Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano in a tag match.
Just this past Friday, he was back in action at Triplemania, AAA’s biggest annual event. Mysterio faced off against the giant Omos, a 7ft 3in wrestler who recently joined AAA after being off WWE TV for a while.
Omos, who had his career on the line, won the match in just 13 minutes. One moment during the match explains why Mysterio was wearing the neck brace: after winning, Omos lifted Mysterio – who was strapped to a stretcher – and slammed him through an announcer’s table as part of a post-match attack. Mysterio was taken out of the arena on a stretcher.
Like many lucha libre wrestlers, Mysterio never takes off his mask, even outside the ring – and he kept it on after the fight with Omos.
In the boxing ring, Garcia won against Benn by technical knockout (TKO) in just two rounds in Nevada. The 28-year-old, defending his WBC welterweight title for the first time, knocked Benn down in round two and trapped him in the ropes before the referee stopped the fight.
After the match, Benn congratulated Garcia, and the two hugged in the ring. Benn was able to walk away but was later taken to the hospital for checks and treatment.
In his post-fight interview, Garcia said, “I think it went exactly how I imagined. Benn tried to pressure me quickly, hoping I’d get tired or start folding. But you can’t just jump in like that.
“He’s exactly what I thought—a good fighter but still needs more experience. I believe he’ll come back. After the fight, Connor said some kind words, and I really respect him. We share the same faith, and I wish him the best. He just needs to be a bit more patient.”
