Andy Murray surprises everyone by ignoring an ‘amazing’ player when he picks who he thinks is the best in the world right now.
Andy Murray recently shared his thoughts on who he believes is the best tennis player in the world right now, and his opinion won’t surprise many fans.
Looking at recent results, world No. 2 Alexander Zverev makes a strong case. The German star won two Grand Slams in 2026, taking his first title at the French Open in April and then beating Ben Shelton in an exciting US Open final. Zverev could even move up past the injured Jannik Sinner to become number one in the ATP rankings if he finishes the year strong.
Though Sinner has had a tough time with injuries and missed several events, many still see him as one of the best. But Murray believes Carlos Alcaraz currently deserves the top spot.
When asked why Alcaraz is the best right now, Murray told TNT Sports, “I think you have to say that when everyone’s healthy. My opinion is that Alcaraz is the best player. But on any day, guys like Sinner and Zverev can beat him. Zverev has had an amazing year with two Grand Slams. Still, when everyone’s fit, I’d say Alcaraz is the best.”
Murray added, “We all have our favorites. I love watching Alcaraz play—he’s got a great personality, fantastic character, and plays with such a great style. He can hit every shot and always has a smile on his face. That’s why I’m picking him.”
Alcaraz started the year strong by beating Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final in February, winning his seventh Grand Slam title at just 22 years old. He also won the Qatar Open the same month and reached two other finals. But in April, he had a wrist injury at the Barcelona Open, which kept him out for four months. He missed big tournaments like the Madrid Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and others during this time.
He made a comeback at the US Open and played brilliantly before losing a thrilling five-set semi-final to Shelton, who then lost to Zverev in the final.
Most recently, Alcaraz helped Team Europe win 13-5 against Team World at the Laver Cup. He beat Taylor Fritz in a close match, while Zverev wrapped up the win with a solid victory over Learner Tien.
Zverev admitted he had a tough time against newcomer Tien but felt confident playing before Alcaraz, knowing his teammate could step in if needed. After winning, Zverev said he was happy to close out the match and that Alcaraz didn’t have to play again. “Having Carlos play after me gives me a lot of confidence,” he added.
