Aston Villa quickly go after two World Cup stars as Morgan Rogers makes a record move to Chelsea
Aston Villa might make offers for two World Cup stars, it’s being reported, after Morgan Rogers agreed to a club-record move to Chelsea. Rogers, who is still playing for England at the World Cup, was expected to leave Villa this summer, even though the team qualified for the Champions League.
He was mostly linked with Arsenal, with their manager Mikel Arteta said to be really keen on signing him. Rogers still has four years left on his Villa contract, so Villa don’t have to rush to sell him. But The Athletic says Chelsea have agreed to pay a huge £117 million fee to sign Rogers.
The 23-year-old has reportedly accepted personal terms on a six-year deal with an option for an extra year, and he’s set for a medical on Monday.
Villa have already lost Youri Tielemans, who joined Manchester United after his £35 million release clause was activated this week. Also, left-back Lucas Digne is expected to move to Paris Saint-Germain after the World Cup. But Villa have been busy in the transfer market, signing Swiss talent Johan Manzambi for about £52 million. Now, they have two players in mind to replace Rogers.
It seems Emery’s team are interested in Netherlands winger Crysencio Summerville, who was recently relegated with West Ham. Although West Ham’s captain Jarrod Bowen signed a new deal, Summerville hasn’t. Tuttomercatoweb says the 24-year-old winger has agreed to join Roma for €46 million, though the deal isn’t done yet.
Even though the Netherlands were knocked out early in the World Cup by Morocco, Summerville shone by scoring two goals and making two assists in just four games.
Villa are also eyeing PSG winger Ibrahim Mbaye. The 18-year-old became the youngest African to score in a World Cup when he scored for Senegal in their 3-1 loss to France. Mbaye played 29 times for PSG last season as they won Ligue 1 and the Champions League, though he didn’t play in the final.
Mbaye faces tough competition at PSG from players like Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola, so moving might be his best chance to get regular game time.
It looks like he’s ready to move, as Fabrizio Romano reported that Mbaye hired top agent Jorge Mendes to help with a transfer. He’s also linked with Manchester City, and some Bundesliga clubs are interested too.
City spent £116 million on Elliot Anderson earlier this month, and if Rogers’ Chelsea move goes through, he’d become the most expensive British player ever. At Chelsea, Rogers would join former Manchester City teammates Cole Palmer and Tosin Adarabioyo.
