Atalanta shares update on Ederson transfer after talks with Man Utd
Manchester United are reportedly close to making their first signing of the summer transfer window.
Man Utd will finish the Premier League season in third place when they play their last game of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon. This season has been one of their easiest in years.
With interim head coach Michael Carrick now permanent, the Red Devils are set to play at least 48 matches in all competitions next season, thanks to qualifying for the Champions League after missing out for a year.
Their summer transfer plans are now underway, and they’re getting close to signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
The 26-year-old Brazilian is expected to leave Bergamo for around £43 million, according to Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Middlemen are working on the deal, and a basic agreement has been made,” says journalist Giovanni Albanese.
“Ederson’s contract ends in 2027, so this will likely be Atalanta’s last chance to sell him for a good price.
This transfer would be the fifth-highest fee Atalanta has ever received, behind players like Mateo Retegui, Teun Koopmeiners, and Cristian Romero.”
Ederson is a hard-working, box-to-box midfielder who plays an important role in Atalanta’s team, especially when defending, and is now seen as one of the best in Serie A.
Born in Campo Grande, Brazil, Ederson moved to Italy in 2022. He played a few games for Salernitana before joining Atalanta, where he’s been a regular in their Champions League squad for the past two seasons.
Atalanta’s first season without former coach Gian Piero Gasperini will end on Sunday, with the team in a spot that will put them in the Conference League next season.
Manchester United should be an appealing choice for Ederson. Their recent fortunes have improved, especially since changing head coaches earlier this year, ending a disappointing period under Ruben Amorim.
The Red Devils will return to the Champions League after two seasons away.
They made it to the Europa League final in 2024-25 but lost to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao.
That final loss meant they missed out on European football in the 2025-26 season.
