Barcelona shows their support for Anthony Gordon after Hansi Flick drops him.
Anthony Gordon didn’t get on the pitch during Barcelona’s big 7-2 win over Racing Santander, as the team kept up their perfect start to the La Liga season. Barca had an amazing game at Camp Nou, with Raphinha scoring a hat-trick, and goals from Joao Cancelo, Lamine Yamal, and Gabriel Jesus. Even a Santander player scored one for them!
For this match, Karim Adeyemi was picked over Gordon on the left wing, but the club shared a kind message for the England star on social media afterward. Gordon has started well since joining Spain and La Liga, with five assists in six games. Still, lots of Barca’s attackers have been on fire this season. Raphinha and Yamal have been especially impressive, scoring 11 and eight goals in seven games. Adeyemi has three goals in seven matches, and Jesus has two in four.
Gordon is the only one in the attack yet to score, which is why Barca’s social media said: “The goal will come, Anthony.” Even though he didn’t start or come off the bench last game, coach Flick often rotates players. He has many strong attacking options and likes to keep them fresh by switching them regularly, just like last season when he rotated Rashford and Raphinha on the left wing, and Torres and Lewandowski up front.
So, Gordon likely isn’t worried about sitting out this match and is expected to play when Barcelona face Sevilla on Saturday. Fans seem split about the club’s message supporting Gordon. Some pointed out he’s already done great with five assists and shouldn’t feel pressured to score soon. One fan said, “He’s doing his job well. 5 appearances, 4 assists, lots of chances created.” Another added, “We don’t care who scores. Just keep up the teamwork and make us happy.”
Others feel the post might be putting extra pressure on him, saying it doesn’t matter if Gordon scores 20 goals or sets up 20 — the team’s the most important thing.
