Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha has caught the eye of two clubs, both interested in signing him on a free transfer after his surprising rise at the 2026 World Cup.
Vozinha was a star for Cape Verde in their first-ever World Cup in North America. The team made it to the round of 32 but were narrowly knocked out by world champions Argentina in extra time. He kept two clean sheets against Spain and Saudi Arabia, helping Cape Verde stay unbeaten in the group stage and advance as one of the best third-place teams.
At 40 years old, Vozinha made 18 saves in the four games he played and quickly became a social media sensation, gaining 25 million followers on Instagram as fans cheered him on. His story was one of the best of the tournament, and it looks like good things are ahead for him.
Vozinha is currently without a club after leaving Portuguese second-division side Chaves when his contract ended. There’s also talk that Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham, is interested. This would give Vozinha a chance to play alongside Lionel Messi, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. Reports say the MLS club holds him in high regard after his World Cup heroics. While he’d likely be the backup goalkeeper, this would be a big step for Vozinha, whose life has changed so much in just a few weeks.
After Argentina’s 3-2 win, Messi showed his respect for Vozinha and Cape Verde by giving him his shirt. Vozinha shared: “I went up to Messi after the game. He hugged me and said, ‘You are great. Your people should be proud of you.’ That meant so much to me. I thanked him and said, ‘Thank you, Leo. You’re the best.’ Then I asked if we could swap shirts. He said he’d give it to me later in the tunnel.”
