CBS Sports studio bursts out laughing as Jamie Carragher jokingly mentions bankruptcy problems
The CBS Sports team was in for a surprise when Jamie Carragher joked about his recent money troubles during the first Champions League show of the season.
On Tuesday night, teams like Man City, Real Madrid, and Aston Villa kicked off the 2026/27 Champions League season with exciting matches across Europe.
With the new season came the return of the popular CBS Sports panel: Kate Scott, Jamie Carragher, Thierry Henry, and Micah Richards. It didn’t take long for Carragher to crack a joke that left his co-hosts speechless.
Just after the Premier League season started, news broke that Carragher was dealing with a bankruptcy petition from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over unpaid taxes—estimated between £700,000 and £800,000. A spokesperson said the issue would be sorted quickly, but Carragher kept quiet about it—until now.
While talking about his hopes for the Champions League, Carragher mentioned Barcelona and their return to form, making a lighthearted nod to their financial struggles. He said, “I think it’s about time we saw Barcelona back where they belong, as one of the world’s best and biggest teams. They’ve had financial problems, haven’t they?” After a pause, he added with a smile, “Haven’t we all…”
Richards and Scott burst out laughing, while Henry looked completely shocked by the joke.
Last season, Barcelona reached the final eight but haven’t won the Champions League since 2015. Their recent money troubles, caused by overspending on players and wages, have played a big part in holding them back.
Still, the 2026/27 season looks like a great chance for Barcelona to bring the Champions League trophy home. Hansi Flick’s team is actually the favorite to win this year, even with Paris Saint-Germain’s strong recent performances.
Barcelona will start their campaign at home against Feyenoord on Wednesday, before facing two English sides: Aston Villa and Manchester City, later in the group stage.
