Chelsea have now received their first offer for Alejandro Garnacho after deciding to sell him. The 22-year-old joined Chelsea from Manchester United for £40 million after falling out of favor at Old Trafford.
Garnacho first stood out as a talented young player, but problems with then-United boss Ruben Amorim led him to move to London last summer. Reflecting on his exit, Garnacho said in December, “I started to be on the bench. It wasn’t all bad—I was only 20—but I felt like I needed to play every game. Maybe some of it was on me too. It was just a moment in life, and sometimes you have to make tough decisions. I’m really proud to be here at Chelsea and still in the Premier League with a club like this.”
Things unfortunately haven’t gone well since then. Garnacho scored only one Premier League goal last season as Chelsea finished 10th and missed out on European football. He also missed out on Argentina’s World Cup squad, which was a letdown after helping them win the Copa America two years earlier.
Fans have noticed Garnacho posting old Manchester United clips on social media and removing mentions of Chelsea, showing he’s still thinking about his time there. With new winger Geovany Quenda arriving and other players in the squad, Chelsea have decided Garnacho is no longer needed and want to sell him to raise funds for new manager Xabi Alonso.
According to Fabrizio Romano, several clubs across Europe have shown interest, and Garnacho is open to leaving during the transfer window. Chelsea haven’t included him in training ahead of the new season. Roma have made an initial loan offer, but Chelsea rejected it, hoping to sell him permanently for £42 million. Napoli, who recently hired new manager Massimiliano Allegri, are also interested but need to adjust their squad first.
If Garnacho leaves, he will be Chelsea’s fourth player to depart this summer after Marc Cucurella, Tyrique George, and Andrey Santos. Cucurella and George have joined Real Madrid and Everton, respectively, while Santos is close to a move to Garnacho’s former club, Manchester United.
