Chelsea player shares honest thoughts about Marc Cucurella leaving for Real Madrid

One of Marc Cucurella’s former Chelsea teammates seemed to show how he feels about the Spaniard’s move to Real Madrid. Cucurella recently signed a six-year deal with Real Madrid after they agreed on a £51.8 million fee. This ends his four years at Stamford Bridge. The deal includes a guaranteed £47.5 million, plus up to £4.3 million in extra payments.

Right now, Cucurella is getting ready for Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde, which takes place in Atlanta later today (June 15). He’s the latest new player at Real Madrid during a busy summer. José Mourinho was recently named their new head coach, and the club is also looking to sign players like Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, Inter’s Denzel Dumfries, and former Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté.

Cucurella was one of Chelsea’s experienced players and helped them win the Conference League and Club World Cup in 2025. But Chelsea might lose another key player soon. Enzo Fernández has been linked with a move away, especially after he liked an Instagram post about Cucurella’s transfer. The Argentina international is also preparing for his team’s World Cup opener against Algeria on June 17.

Fernández caused some talk when he said he’d like to live in Madrid because it reminds him of Buenos Aires. On June 14, journalist Ben Jacobs shared that Fernández wants to join Cucurella at Real Madrid. He wrote, “Enzo Fernández is eager to join Marc Cucurella at Real Madrid and has openly said he wants to leave Chelsea. Chelsea’s asking price is £120 million. The club is calm but wants the right offer. Real Madrid is still deciding on the kind of midfielder they want. Other names being discussed are Mateus Fernandes and Rodri.”

Fernández joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for a British-record £106.8 million. He’s scored 31 goals and made 30 assists in 169 games for Chelsea and has a contract until 2032. But after Chelsea’s Champions League exit to PSG in March, he wasn’t sure about staying. He told ESPN Argentina, “Can I guarantee I’ll stay at Chelsea next season? I don’t know. Right now, I’m focused on here and then the World Cup, and we’ll see.”

Fernández was later suspended for two matches by Chelsea’s then-boss Liam Rosenior. His agent, Javier Pastore, defended him, calling the punishment “completely unfair.” Pastore explained, “Enzo didn’t understand why he was punished. When the coach told him, he accepted it because he’s a professional and respects decisions. But the punishment doesn’t make sense because he never said he wanted to leave Chelsea or mentioned any club. He only said he’d like to live in Madrid because it’s similar to Buenos Aires and because of the culture and weather. For an Argentine, this is natural to say, but he never said he wants to leave Chelsea or London.”
