Confusing FIFA World Cup suspension has US Soccer looking for answers as two staff members face consequences
The United States team is confused about a surprising suspension connected to their World Cup round of 16 loss to Belgium. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at Lumen Field in Seattle, ending their promising run in a tough way against the strong Red Devils.
Before the game, there was a lot of talk about Folarin Balogun being allowed to play even though he had been sent off in the previous match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Interestingly, after President Donald Trump got involved, FIFA decided to delay Balogun’s one-game ban for a year, citing their Disciplinary Code as the reason for this unusual decision.
This caused anger among football fans, and the Belgian Football Association said they would appeal the decision. Despite Monaco star Balogun starting the match, Belgium was eager to win and even celebrated with Trump’s famous dance move.
Alongside Balogun, two other US staff members were suspended for the game, and those suspensions stood firm. According to the Associated Press, FIFA suspended team manager Sam Zapatka and vice president of security Frank Pannell for the game, though no clear reason was given. The US Soccer Federation also said the suspensions weren’t related to the Balogun controversy.
Zapatka has worked with the team since 2015 and became the team manager after five years. Pannell has a background in the Secret Service, the CIA, and private work before taking his current role.
While no official details have come from either federation, reports have shed some light. ESPN, citing a source, says no fights happened, but the suspensions were due to “mishandling FIFA match protocols and being in areas where they weren’t allowed.” Front Office Sports even suggested the suspensions might be connected to Balogun, since he returned to the pitch for celebrations when he shouldn’t have been on the field after his red card.
Though not confirmed, the comment about breaking match rules fits with the situation involving Balogun and the team.
