Conor McGregor has placed a $100,000 bet on Sunday’s World Cup final after “some guy on the internet” predicted back in 2021 that Argentina would beat Spain in the big game.
Argentina is trying to defend their title at MetLife Stadium, home to the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets, as they face off against Spain, the European champions.
Lionel Scaloni’s team has come from behind several times this summer, including in their semi-final win over England, where late goals by Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez helped them win 2-1.
Spain started slow against Cape Verde in the group stage but then scored big wins over Portugal, Belgium, and France, making them a slight favorite heading into the final.
According to stats company Opta, Spain has about a 59.56% chance to win the trophy in New Jersey.
But McGregor thinks the underdog Argentina will take the win. He even bet $100,000 on Argentina to win 3-2 in regular time.
In a video on Instagram, McGregor explained that he was inspired by the X user @actuallyimthe, who in 2021 predicted Argentina would beat Spain 3-2 in the 2026 final.
“Hey everyone, Conor McGregor here with my World Cup final bet. I’m betting on Argentina to beat Spain 3-2 in 90 minutes,” he said.
“Why? Because five years ago, some guy on the internet guessed Argentina and Spain would be in the final and said the score would be 3-2. How did he know? And now here they are.
“Let’s go. That’s my World Cup bet. Some guy on the internet, bring it home for me! Let’s go.”
McGregor also shared a screenshot showing his 36-1 bet, which could win him $3.6 million if it happens.
Recently, McGregor’s much-awaited UFC comeback fight at UFC 329 ended quickly with a 69-second loss to Max Holloway after his knee gave out early on.
At the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White said McGregor likely injured his ACL.
On Sunday, McGregor shared the final news on X: “It was ACL and meniscus,” he wrote. “Same injury as the first Holloway fight, but this time the other leg. Quite a shock.
“I came back to fight Diego Brandao in 9 months after that. With today’s medical advances and better training, I believe I can return by next summer.
“I’m walking without a crutch now. I even did some leg exercises the other day with no problem. So I’m walking fine and can activate my quad under resistance. All very positive. I’m staying disciplined and have been since the fight.
“I wonder if I was actually saved from something worse. I believe so. I would have gone to the after-party feeling ‘like the man’ and who knows what could’ve happened. I think I was saved. Thank God! Onward, no sad stories.”
