Cristiano Ronaldo speaks out, sharing the real story behind his feud with Jorge Jesus from Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has shared a detailed message explaining what led to the recent disagreement with Portugal’s coach, Jorge Jesus.

Even though Ronaldo played in Portugal’s 1-0 win against Wales, he didn’t get on the field during their next 2-1 Nations League win away at Norway. This caused tension between Ronaldo and Jesus, which led to a face-to-face meeting with the Portuguese Football Federation president, Pedro Proença.

After the Norway match, Jesus said he had told Ronaldo he might come on during the game but then decided it wasn’t the right moment. However, the meeting didn’t fully resolve things. Ronaldo later left the team before Portugal’s 4-2 win in Denmark.

After leaving, Ronaldo posted a long statement on social media promising to explain why he left. Now, a week into the situation, he has shared his side in a 673-word post. He said he had planned to retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup but was convinced by the federation to continue playing. He also gave his support for Jorge Jesus to become head coach after the tournament.

Ronaldo said he was happy with Jesus’ appointment and shared that they met before the season started, where Jesus told him he was key to the team. The coach planned for Ronaldo to play the first and last matches and explained he would make several substitutions during games to manage players’ fitness. Jesus also suggested Ronaldo might not travel to Norway and Denmark, asking him to play the first match and then stay in Portugal before joining the team again later. Ronaldo politely declined, saying that as team captain, he wanted to set a good example by traveling with the team.

Jesus agreed with this, and they had another calm talk just before the training camp began. Ronaldo played against Wales, handed the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes when he was substituted, and was focused on the team’s win.

On the day of the Norway match, Ronaldo was surprised when the coach asked if he was ready to play for 30 minutes. Although this wasn’t part of his training plan, Ronaldo said yes. But despite warming up at halftime, he didn’t get to play, which Ronaldo says broke the coach’s promise.

Feeling upset, Ronaldo skipped greeting fans after the game and later had a deep, honest conversation with Jesus and Simão Coutinho, Al Nassr’s sporting director, to clear things up. They agreed the coach would publicly explain what happened to fix the situation, but the press conference didn’t go as expected. Ronaldo felt the coach’s words and attitude didn’t match their private discussions.

Because of this second broken promise, Ronaldo decided to leave the camp, saying honesty is very important to him, even when it’s hard. He apologized to his teammates and fans for leaving and for not greeting supporters after the Norway game.

Ronaldo made it clear he’s always respected the coaches’ decisions and never interfered with tactics during his long career. But when trust is broken, he feels it’s hard to stay.

He also addressed talk about farewell matches, assuring fans and all Portuguese people that there will be special games to say goodbye when the time comes. For now, his main focus is competing and winning for Portugal. He shared a personal moment about staying at the team camp even after learning of his father’s passing, showing his dedication to the national team.

Ronaldo finished by saying that if he’s fit and playing well for his club, he’s ready to keep representing Portugal and giving his best. He hopes everyone understands that this is his honest truth.
