England players Dan Burn and Morgan Rogers are giving fans hope that midfielder Jordan Henderson might still play a part in the World Cup, even after breaking his wrist at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday.
Henderson got hurt while the team was celebrating their incredible 3-2 win against co-hosts Mexico. The match was tough, with high altitude, a long weather delay, Mexico’s home crowd, and a red card for right-back Jarell Quansah. The 36-year-old, who has played only six minutes so far in the World Cup, fell over a digital advertising board and needed surgery for his broken arm.
With only three games left in the next 10 days, it seems unlikely Henderson will play again. But his teammates haven’t given up hope. Surprisingly, they say the Brentford player could still join the team on the field before England’s run is over.
“I hope he can still be involved with us for the rest of the tournament,” said Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers at their training camp in Kansas City. “He’s not ruling himself out… He believes in himself, and the confidence and spirit he brings to the group are huge. He’s really the heartbeat of the team.”
Newcastle defender Dan Burn, who came on late to help defend, jokingly admitted he might have caused Henderson’s injury. “I think I might have killed him a bit because I jumped over too easily,” Burn said. “I heard the noise instantly, and with Hendo, if he doesn’t get up, you know something’s wrong. He’s had surgery now, and hopefully, he’ll still be able to play in the tournament.”
In other news, England will face Norway in the quarter-finals. France and Morocco go head-to-head in the first quarter-final on Thursday, and England’s game is set for Miami on Saturday.
